Year 7 students are doing Stage 1 of the Foreign Language Spelling Bee in class in the run-up to the Christmas break. Everyone is taking part and students have 60 seconds to translate and then spell in French as many words as they can from a set list of 50. All students have been issued with the word list but a copy can be found below. In addition, if students want to practise for the competition, they can do so at lunchtimes in L3 12.20-12.50. The official FLSB program is below and can be safely installed on any Windows PC.

The Languages Department is rolling out the use of Duolingo.com for all year groups currently. Duolingo is a linear learning platform for languages which means that it does not follow our course modules but instead takes students from the very basics up to quite complex language. All students in Years 7-9 are expected to do Duolingo lessons as part of their prep. It's very important that you "connect" to your class teacher on Duolingo so they can see how you're getting on. So once you've created an account, make sure you click on the link below to connect to the right teacher and year group.
Languages summer homework is quite straightforward and should not be too much hard work for students who deserve their well-earned rest. That said, the following are great ways to stay on top of your languages or introduce yourself to one you'll be learning for the first time in September.
New Year 7 should have received a copy of their summer "Prep à emporter" (Takeaway homework) as part of their summer prep pack. A copy of it can be obtained below. All other year groups (Year 8 and 9) should sign up to Duolingo, add the app to phones or tablets and work through at least three "levels" on their languages (French, German and/or Spanish). You can sign up to the relevant classes by clicking on the links below. If you already have an account, just sign in when prompted. NOTE DOWN YOUR USER NAME AND PASSWORD somewhere safe so you don't forget them. Please note that passports now do NOT need to be handed into the office but you must make sure your child comes with theirs on the morning of the trip or they will not be allowed on the coach!
It's that time of year at Gildredge House when students get to choose their languages pathways for next year. Please refer to the letter sent home for more detail but here's a reminder:
Year 7 moving to Year 8 in September Can choose to stick with Latin and French in Year 8 or exchange one of these for Spanish. Remember that you cannot pick up a language later in the school that you have previously dropped. The online form is available here Year 8 moving to Year 9 in September Can choose to stick with their two current languages (or Spanish and Culture for some) or replace ONE language with a new one, i.e. Spanish or German. Please remember that you cannot replace both languages and that you cannot pick up something that's been dropped last year. The online form for year 8 is available here The Languages Department at Gildredge House is looking for your views on Takeaway Prep. As you know, every half-term, students are given a new "Menu" of prep tasks they can choose from depending on their ability and stage of learning. Does this work for you? Why/Why not? How can it be improved? To add your thoughts, please click on this link and leave a "note" with your views. http://padlet.com/jmgardner/taprep
Round Two of the French Spelling Bee takes place during Community and Challenge on February 11th. Students from Year 7 took part in a round of class competitions at the end of December, when they had to translate and spell out (in French!) as many words as they could from a list of 50 in 60 seconds. The quarter-finalists going through to this next round are: Jack Ireland, William Gwynne, Daisy Phillips, Alice Nicolle and Anna Briscoe from 7 Carter, Xander Mchugh, Saskia Griffiths, Freya Cowley, Odin Finnsson-Bell , Ellie Molloson and Charlotte Holder from 7 Bader, Harriet Reade, Joseph Campbell, Kiera Graham, Rudi Armstrong and Alexandra E-Payno from 7 Ravilious, Keira Sear, Billy Thomas, Stella Grover and Isabella Cowen from 7 Hopkins, Rosie Clifford, Holly Stewart, Jasmine Anderton, Georgia Porteous and Tilo Schulmeyer from 7 Johnston, Eleanor Edwards, Harrison Hendrick, Lucas Morrison, Ella Blake and Thierry Soobhee-Binns from 7 Shackleton.
This time, the competition will be held in the Atrium with all the competitors being cheered on by their housemates. The Gildredge House Language Ambassadors will help run the competition and are training the contestants beforehand. The top four Bees will then go through to a regional final, representing Gildredge House against a number of local schools in a competition being held at Brighton University. Bonne chance, tout le monde! French theatre production of Bon Voyage! by the Flying Theatre Company
On Thursday 4th December, travelling performance troupe The Flying Theatre Company visited Gildredge House to perform their comic all-French play Bon Voyage! The show was a frenetic story about two cousins going on a surfing holiday together and getting into all sorts of scrapes. Both actors delivered the vast majority of their lines in French but this didn’t put any of our students off as they regularly recognised a range of words for food, pets, weather and holidays. This was the first time The Atrium had been used as a performance space and it functioned really well. Many thanks to all those students who came along and to their parents for helping make it happen! If you’d like to post a review of the show, just comment on our blog post about it at www.ghlanguages.weebly.com Monsieur Gardner, Head of Languages We asked two students to review the show for the bulletin: Darcie Bennett, Year 8 “Bon Voyage” was a great show! It was all about holidays and the weather and the topic fitted in well with what we are learning in French. Even though I don’t speak fluent French or know every word I knew what they were saying, also the actions helped as well. If they said a sentence and you only knew a few words from what they were saying you could then work out the rest. They always kept our attention! They would do some tricks which you wanted to see more of, when they were telling the weather they said it was going to rain so they sprayed water into the audience. I really enjoyed it and I think that we are really lucky to have opportunities like this. Students of French and Spanish in Years 7 and 8 have been choosing what to do for prep each week from a "takeaway menu" of tasks since the new school year began in September. As we're approaching the end of our second half-term of this, the Languages Department is keen to get feedback from both students and parents as to how this has worked. We think it's been largely successful but we would welcome your input to help improve the strategy in the New Year. Please post your comments below. The Paris residential trip has been announced and parents are requested to return their slips and pay the £40 deposit via Squid as soon as possible. Below are the answers to a few of the most common questions.
